About Alaska Seaplanes

Alaska Seaplanes is the commuter airline of Southeast Alaska, based in Juneau, Alaska. Alaska Seaplanes flies to Juneau, Skagway, Haines, Gustavus, Hoonah, Kake, Sitka, Tenakee Springs, Angoon, Elfin Cove, Pelican and Excursion Inlet.

Alaska Seaplanes was founded in 1997 and went through many changes under different names. In 2013 Alaska Seaplanes was fully established and now offers charter flights throughout Southeast Alaska. The airline was founded by Aral and Craig Loken who both grew in the aviation industry with Juneau Air Taxi, which later became known as Channel Flying).

The Lokens sold Alaska Seaplanes to former Wings of Alaska Managers in 2011. The year after the partners expanded into the wheel plane market with the acquisition of Air Excursions.

Alaska Seaplanes flies services to Whitehorse

From 15th June 2018, Alaska Seaplanes added a new service to Whitehorse. The airline will fly between Juneau and Whitehorse three times a week — once on Tuesday, once on Friday and once on Saturday. Alaska Seaplanes will use a Pilatus PC12 aircraft to operate the service. The flight is expected to take 55 minutes.

Whitehorse is Alaska Seaplanes 13th destination from its airport hub at Juneau International Airport (JNU). The airline also flies to other destinations including Sitka, Kake and Hoonah.

Alaska Seaplanes launches flights between Whitehorse and Juneau

Alaska Seaplanes has announced plans for thrice-weekly flights between Whitehorse, the capital to the Yukon, and Juneau, capital of Alaska, on a seasonal basis. From May to September, the 45 minute flight will link the two cities, which, despite being only 270km apart, normally take poor passengers 8 hours to travel to and from by ferry. One unfortunate thing about life in the North is that the transportation corridors tend to run North-South. It’s relatively cheap and easy to fly from Juneau to Seattle, Whitehorse to Vancouver, and Yellowknife to Edmonton. But it’s hard to go East-West between circumpolar cities.

Juneau is one of the few places on earth left inaccesible by road (for another se our blog post on Iquitos). For this reason, this new route is going to have an immensly positive impact on the residents of Alaska's capital. The route also makes it easier to foster community ties. The past Juneau tennis and soccer exchanges I have participated in have been a lot of fun. They offer participants the chance to hone their skills against new competitors, experience different facilities, make new friends and see another northern city.

Juneau

Today, Juneau is a thriving community that offers small-town hospitality as well as city amenities. The town has become a hub for tourism and cruise ship passengers and with its mountains, rivers, glaciers, and forests Juneau offers majestic scenery to behold.

Juneau je hlavní město státu Aljaška. Obyvatel má jen třicet tisíc, příroda v okolí ale bere dech.

A community formerly known as Rockwell and before that it was known as Harrisburg. Even before it was known as Harrisburg, Rockwell, or Juneau, the village was a settlement for the Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian tribes that knew it as a different name. The community received its current namesake after Joseph Juneau teamed up with a member of the Tlingit tribe and discovered gold plots in the land. Not long after this discovery Juneau became a popular settlement town.

Juneau has plenty of activities for travelers to enjoy, such as exploring Historic Downtown Juneau or the Mendenhall Glacier and Visitor Center.
