China's Tibet Airlines starts direct flight on Chengdu-Kathmandu route

China's Tibet Airlines has commenced its direct flight service on Chengdu-Kathmandu-Chengdu sector, establishing first ever direct flight between the two cities.

The airline's plane TV 9899 departed from Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport at 6:16 p.m.local time (1016 GMT) and touched down at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA), Kathmandu at 7:15 p.m. local time (1315 GMT), according to a press statement issued by Himalaya Airlines, general sales agent of Tibet Airlines.

According to Himalaya Airlines, the Tibet Airlines is conducting four flights a week on the route on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. The airline operates its Airbus 319 on the route.

Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal, the aviation regulator, had granted permission to the Tibet Airlines to fly on the route last month.

After conducting a successful proving flight on June 19, the Chinese airline company started the scheduled flights to Nepal starting from Tuesday.

It is the fifth Chinese airline entering into the Nepali sky after four Chinese carriers -- Air China, China Southern, China Eastern and Sichuan Airlines.

According to Nepali government officials, increased flight connectivity with China is expected to bring more Chinese tourists to Nepal. Chinese tourist arrivals jumped 55.26 percent to 104,005 in 2016.

Tibet Airlines seeks permission to fly to Ktm

Lhasa-based Tibet Airlines has sought permission from the Ministry of Tourism to operate flights between Kathmandu and Chengdu, the capital of southwestern China’s Sichuan province. The carrier will be the fifth Chinese airline company to fly to Kathmandu if given permission to operate flights.

Ministry officials said they are assessing the documents submitted by the company. As per the proposal, it would initially operate four flights a week between Kathmandu and Chengdu. The operation date, however, has not been unveiled.

The airline, which is backed by Air China, had said in 2011 that it would launch flights to South Asia by 2015.

Currently, four Chinese carriers--Air China, China Southern, China Eastern and Sichuan Airlines--operate flights to Nepal.

China Southern operates two daily flights on the Kathmandu-Guangzhou route, while China Eastern and Air China operate daily flights linking Kathmandu with Kunming and Lhasa, respectively. Sichuan operates four weekly flights on the Chengdu-Lhasa-Kathmandu sector.

Tibet Airlines has appointed Himalaya Airlines as its general sales agent in Kathmandu. According to the ministry officials, they are also assessing whether an airline can appoint another airline as its general sales agent. Besides, Tibet Airlines also holds a 49 percent stake in Himalaya Airlines.

Nepal and China signed a revised bilateral air services agreement (ASA) in February 2014 permitting the operation of 56 flights a week with any type of aircraft on a reciprocal basis.

Under the revised pact, seven weekly flights were added on an annual basis since 2015, which took the number of weekly flights to 70 by 2016. Under the old ASA, Chinese airlines were allowed to operate 14 flights per week.
