Scoot to wet-lease a B777 to cover for B787 downtime

Scoot (TR, Singapore Changi) has announced it will wet-lease one B777-200(ER) from Singapore Airlines (SQ, Singapore Changi) to cover the shortage of B787-8s and -9s caused by the technical issues with Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines.

The wet-leased aircraft will be deployed between June 6 and June 30, 2018, on the low-cost, long-haul operator's service from Singapore Changi to Sydney Kingsford Smith.

It is recalled that Singapore Airlines CEO Goh Phong Choon recently told a media gathering that Singapore Airlines Group has not seen any headwinds due to the Trent 1000 engine issues currently afflicting carriers across the globe.

According to CAPA, after the initial lengthy grounding of one aircraft in the second half of 2017, Scoot resumed full operations of all its B787s in early 2018. However, the new airworthiness directive issued in April 2018, which tightened the requirements for inspections of the Trent 1000 engines and reduced ETOPS capabilities, has reportedly caused new headaches for the airline.

Flightradar24 ADS-B data shows that out of Scoot's ten B787-8s, 9V-OFD (msn 37121) has been grounded since May 19, while all the others are currently active. All six of the carrier's B787-8s are also active.

NokScoot expands fleet with 737s

NokScoot, the low-cost airline based in Thailand, plans to add its first Boeing 737s in 2018, which will allow the carrier to downgauge some of its lower-demand widebody routes. At present, NokScoot operates four Boeing 777-200s. However, the airline plans to introduce five used 737s by the end of this year, according to NokScoot head of engineering and fleet management Raymond Tan. This would mean a significant departure for NokScoot, which was established as a joint venture between Singapore’s Scoot and Thailand’s Nok Air for the purpose of operating widebodies.

The first new 737 is set to join the Nokscoot's fleet in June, with the second arriving in July. The 737s will replace the 777s on routes where demand does not justify the use of the widebodies, Tan said. This will in turn allow the airline to open new markets with the 777s, and it is considering routes in Japan, South Korea and India. There are also plans for the airline to add another 777-200 in the upcoming months.

NokScoot sets cautious course

NokScoot will pursue conservative growth, rather than adopting an aggressive expansion as was expected after the recent lifting of the red flag against Thailand over aviation safety standards. The medium-to-long-haul low carrier plans to add only one aircraft to its fleet in the first half of next year, and it may acquire another one later this year. NokScoot, a joint venture of Singapore's Scoot and Thailan's Nok Air, recently took delivery of a fourth Boeing 777-200 widebody jet. NokScoot will pursue conservative growth, rather than adopting an aggressive expansion as was expected after the recent lifting of the red flag against Thailand over aviation safety standards. A five-aircraft fleet and the planned ramp-up of aircraft use from 12 hours a day per plan to 13-14 should also support NokScoot's coverage of China, which remains the backbone of the airline's business.

NokScoot identified North Asia as the next region it plans to grow into, but this will depend on the lifting of restrictions placed after ICAO issued a significant safety concern (SSC) on Thailand in 2015.

Once the restrictions have been lifted, the Bangkok Don Mueang-based long-haul, low-cost carrier intends to operate scheduled services to cities in Japan, before expadning into South Korea. This year, the carrier will take a Boeing 777-200ER on lease by October, followed by two additional models in 2018.

Nokscoot have identified North Asia as the next region it plans to grow into, but this will depend on the lifting of restrictions placed after ICAO issued a significant safety concern (SSC) on Thailand in 2015.

Once the restrictions have been lifted, the Bangkok Don Mueang-based long-haul, low-cost carrier intends to operate scheduled services to cities in Japan, before expadning into South Korea.

Nokscoot so admits that “there has been a huge impact” on charter and scheduled flights to and from China as a result of the Thai government’s crackdown on low-value tourism. But despite the crackdown, which began in October last year, load factors for its China services still stands at “around 90%,” notes Ng.

To alleviate the situation, the airline is working with local tour agencies to offer “value for money” itineraries for Chinese tourists.

This year, the carrier will take a Boeing 777-200ER on lease by October, followed by two additional models in 2018. Flight Fleets Analyzer shows that NokScoot operates three 777-200ERs.
