Myanmar National Airlines suspends flights to Phuket
Myanmar Airlines has made the executive decision to suspend flights between Phuket and Yangon from June until August. According to the company, this is due to low traffic during tourist "low season". The twice-weekly service, which comprised one flight each way on Fridays and Sundays will continue as usual from the beginning of September onwards. Arrangements are already in place for any passengers who had booked themselves on the cancelled flights with MNA. The airline is still focussed on blazing the tourist trail from Myanmar to Thailand.

Myanmar National, Mann Yadanarpon to join forces in Myanmar
Myanmar National Airlines (UB, Yangon) and Mann Yadanarpon Airlines (7Y, Yangon) have entered into a partnership which will see the carriers cooperate on domestic services in Myanmar under the new brand Myanmar Sky Alliances, the Myanmar Times has reported.
The new partnership is set to enter into force on May 10. The combined network under the Myanmar Sky Alliances brand will include 13 destinations. Each of the airlines will provide two ATR72-600s for the operation. For Mann Yadanarpon Airlines, this would mean assigning the carrier's entire fleet to Myanmar Sky Alliances.
For its part, MNA will still have four ATR 72-600s, one each of ATR 72-200 and ATR 72-500, four B737-800s, and two EMB-190s for its operations.
The main bases for the cooperation will most likely be Yangon, Mandalay Int'l, Heho, and Naypyitaw.
The cooperation can be seen as a sign of the impending consolidation of the Myanmarese market. Following the opening up of the country's economy a few years ago, there are currently eight active scheduled airlines in the country, many of them operating a small fleet of aircraft on domestic routes. It is recalled that AirAsia Group has recently said it is interested in entering Myanmar through a joint-venture with an existing carrier. Mark Turner, Chief Commercial Officer of FMI Air (ND, Yangon), has also told ch-aviation that the market needs consolidation.

Myanmar National Airlines and Mann Yadanarpon Airlines start operating joint service this month
Myanmar National Airlines and Mann Yadanarpon Airlines have signed an agreement to start a new joint operation under the name 'Myanmar Sky Alliances' that will serve domestic flights. The joint operation will connect 13 destinations and offer additional flights to both of their respective schedules. Each airline will supply two aircraft and the operation will start on May 10th.
There are currently 11 airlines in Myanmar and the decision to create a joint service could be due to the belief that Myanmar air travel is an oversaturated market. Transport minister U Thant Sin Maung said that Myanmar should have four airlines, as the majority of other ASEAN countires have somewhere between four and six.

Good news for Myanmar National Airlines! Myanmar creates new destinations to attract tourists.
Myanmar's Hotels and Tourism Ministry is striving to encourage tourism by developing new avenues of tourism programs and creating new tourist destinations. The ministry has permitted about 1,628 hotels and guest houses with some 65,470 rooms to operate as of March 31, official Global New Light of Myanmar reported. As of December 2017, the ministry had also granted over 2,676 travel agencies, issuing 4,503 tour guide licenses, 3,449 regional tour guide licenses and 2,564 transport licenses. The ministry is also striving to promote eco-tourism, cultural tourism and community-based tourism in resource-rich areas, including historical landscapes, rivers, lakes, beaches, islands and forests.
Foreign tourists visit Myanmar mostly through three international airports, the border checkpoints as well as via luxury cruise liners. Therefore, Myanmar based airlines, such as Myanmar National Airlines, can expect to reap the consequences of international passengers on flights.

Mandalay International Airport receives over 1 million passengers in 2017
Over a million local and foreign passengers entered Mandalay International Airport last year exceeding their number of 2016, according to sources from the Department of Civil Aviation. In 2017, domestic airlines such as Myanmar National Airlines, Air Mandalay, Air KBZ, Asian Wings Airways, Myanmar Airways International, Yangon Airways, Shwe Myanmar Airlines (now Golden Myanmar Airlines), Mann Yadanabon Airlines and FMI Air conducted regular flights to Mandalay International Airport.
Those airlines transported 890,000 passengers to the airport last year while just over 70,000 entered the airport in 2016. The number of international passengers arrived at the Mandalay airport last year was 430,000 bringing the total number to 1.29 million in total.
"In 2017, 1.29 million of local and foreign air passengers entered the Mandalay airport, exceeding the number of 2016," said Ye Htut Aung, deputy director general of the Civil Aviation Department. Myanmar's international airports in Yangon, Mandalay and Nay Pyi Taw were upgraded with the help of local and foreign private sectors. Moreover, discussion is underway with the tender winning foreign company to build Hanthawady International Airport, which will be the biggest one in Myanmar, in Bago Region. The airport will accommodate 12 million passengers.

Myanmar state-owned airline to extend wing to China's Chengdu
Myanmar National Airlines (MNA), a state-owned airline, will extend wing to China's Chengdu, a report quoted a chief executive officer of the airline as reporting Friday.
The planned schedule-flight will be introduced in addition to 26 domestic destinations and some international routes including Singapore, China's Hong Kong, Bangkok, Chaing Mai and Gaya, MNA Chief Executive Officer U Than Tun said.
With Boeing 737-800 aircraft, MNA launched its first international flight to Singapore in August 2015, followed by the second to China's Hong Kong in December the same year and to Bangkok in February 2016.
The country's oldest airline, founded in 1948, carried out reforms in 2015, expanding its regional and foreign destinations in a bid to keep up with international airlines flying between international airports of Myanmar.
MNA was renamed from state-run Myanmar Airways (MA) in December 2014 after corporatization.
Domestic private airlines in operation in Myanmar have reached eight, while foreign airlines that fly Myanmar remain as 24, according to figures so far available.
