IndiGo may look at Jet Airways if Air India deal doesn't work out

IndiGo was the first airline to show interest in buying the debt-laden Air India. They sent their bid to the government, the day the government decided to sell the airline's stake. InterGlobe Aviation Ltd-run IndiGo is considering investing in Jet Airways to attain a marked international footprint if it fails to acquire a stake in the debt-laden Air India, reports Mint.

The airline, as it progresses, will focus on finding managers who are experienced and will be able to run IndiGo by global standards, even if it is required to change the current senior management team, sources told Mint. IndiGo was the first airline to show interest in buying the state-run Air India. The company has sent its bid to the government. Sources told Mint that even if the bids fail, IndiGo will make a considerable mark in the international destination market through the organic way, but it would be “a slower process."

As of now, IndiGo flies to 7 foreign destinations — Bangkok, Doha, Singapore, Kathmandu, Muscat, Dubai and Sharjah. Jet Airways and Air India, on the other hand, have flights which cross the Asian continent. IndiGo is interested in only the international operations of Air India because of its flying rights and slots and said that the airline will maintain Air India's brand for the international business, according to the report. If the government urges on the airline to take up both domestic and international operations, IndiGo will negotiate to break-up Air India into four parts according to India's geography and acquire one along with the international operation, the report added. Only if this does not work, IndiGo will look into other alternatives, one of them being Jet Airways.

Jet Airways, China Eastern Airlines start codeshare flights

China Eastern Airlines will operate Jet Airways' Delhi-Shanghai Pudong and Kolkata-Kuming routes. Naresh Goyal-promoted Jet Airways and Chinese carrier China Eastern Airlines have commenced codeshare flights amid the increasing hostility between the two countries over the construction of a road near Bhutan tri-junction.

As part of the codeshare partnership inked earlier, China Eastern Airlines will operate Jet Airways' Delhi-Shanghai Pudong and Kolkata-Kuming routes. The Jet Airways will operate Delhi-Bengaluru, Delhi-Kolkata and Delhi-Mumbai routes of the Shanghai-based airline. A Jet Airways spokesperson confirmed the commencement of air services by the two carriers from yesterday as part of the reciprocal codeshare partnership.

Codesharing allows an airline to book on its passenger on its partner carriers and provide seamless transport to destination where it has no presence. Following this, the Jet Airways customers can now fly seamlessly to Pudong and Kunming cities in China from New Delhi and Kolkata. Similarly, Chinese passengers will have direct connectivity to Bengaluru, Kolkata and Mumbai from New Delhi through the flights operated by Jet Airways. China Eastern Airlines, which has three subsidiaries as well a cargo carrier and is a member of the global airlines grouping SkyyTeam, operates to 217 destinations through its hub at Shanghai Pudong International airport.

Besides, it has secondary hubs at Beijing, Kunming, Xi'an and Qingdao. The military standoff between India and China began on June 16 after the Chinese army tried to build a road near the Bhutan tri-junction. India has protested the construction of the road, fearing it would allow China to cut India's access to its north-eastern states.

Jet Airways announced it would launch daily direct flights from Chennai to Paris and Bengaluru to Amsterdam starting October 29

The new flight -- Jet Airways 9W128 -- from Chennai will depart at 1.45am and arrive in Paris at 8.10am local time. In the return direction, 9W 127 will depart from Paris at 10.10am and arrive in Chennai at 12.15am. The new service is being planned to capitalise on the growing demand for outbound leisure and business travel and also to tap the inbound tourists from Europe to the southern region of India through Chennai.

Jet Airways announced it is planning to transition its fleet to an all-jet composition following reports it is looking to retire its fleet of Avions de Transport Régional turboprops.

The Indian carrier currently operates fifteen ATR72-500s and three -600s on scheduled passenger flights connecting India's Tier I cities with smaller Tier II and III towns. The aircraft are being withdrawn given Jet Airways' decision to focus on its international operational network. The type is also hamstrung by a lack of local pilots. As such, Jet Airways is forced to recruit foreign pilots to man the ATRs leading to higher operating cost. As it stands, Jet Airways has been gradually replacing the ATRs with larger B737 jets on select routes including Delhi Int'l-Bhopal, Pune-Hyderabad Int'l, and Kolkata Int'l-Aizawl. ATR bases at Mumbai Int'l and Kolkata have also been closed down in anticipation of the type's eventual removal from service.
