Founded in 1926 JAT Airways was the national carrier of Serbia until it was rebranded as Air Serbia in 2013.

Air Serbia will support 100,000 jobs and add US$ 1 billion to Serbian economy
Oxford Economics' forecast shows that Air Serbia will provide more than 13 thousand people with direct and indirect employment, and add $200 million to the Serbian economy just by its core operations. Fuel, maintenance and local Serbian suppliers will be the most benefited from its operation.
The additional $700 million will come from the opportunities generated by the connection of Serbia with the rest of the world, via Air Serbia's growing pool of routes.
The European Commission approves Etihad's role in Air Serbia's shareholding
The EC has determined after an investigation into Air Serbia's operation that the effective control of the airline relies on the Serbian Government, which holds the major 51% of the company.
Although Serbia is still in the list of candidate members to the European Union, they still are required to follow EU laws including aviation - related ones. As such, no Non-European entity can own more than 49% of a European airline. After the investigations carried out it was determined that Air Serbia's ownership rests with the Serbian Government and not Etihad Airways.
Air Serbia's new route to New York
Air Serbia just launched its first trans-Atlantic service since 1992 from Belgrade to New York. In the short run Air Serbia expects to serve nonstop passengers, however they expect to serve more connecting passengers to its neighbour countries in the coming years.
After Etihad bought 49% of the company in 2013, they have not kept from making changes and restructuring. The name change and the lay off of almost half the staff of former JAT Airways was just the beginning. Corporate restructuring and a complete change in the company's values made a huge impact on their performance. Three years later, Air Serbia is set to add $1 billion to Serbia's economy and contribute with more than 100 thousand jobs.
