Germania challenges Air Berlin's state guarantee

A state guarantee from the German government to help keep Air Berlin (AB, Berlin Tegel) operational is being challenged by Germania (ST, Berlin Schönefeld), the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) has reported. The newspaper further reports that the EUR150 million (USD179 million) loan has not yet actually been paid by the Federal Government, with the airline using its own cash reserves which are expected to last until mid-September.

In its filing, Germania calls the state loan 'incomprehensible'. However, the lodgement of the complaint does not have the power to hinder the government's ability to make the payout, should it be necessary to do so before the hearing date. The case is scheduled to be heard on September 15, which is also when the next creditor meeting will be held.

According to the FAZ report, the state guarantee was necessary to prevent Air Berlin from losing its Air Operator's Certificate (AOC) when it filed for insolvency. The government is betting on not needing to make the payout, hoping to wrap up Air Berlin's sale quickly. However, proceedings have been complicated by wide-ranging interest from various parties and allegations that Lufthansa (LH, Frankfurt Int'l) is receiving favouritism.

Germania starts first St. Petersburg service

St. Petersburg welcomed the first Germania aircraft with a traditional water canon salute on the ramp and travellers departing on the first flight were greeted at the check-in with candy and souvenirs. The very first passenger received a special set of gifts from the airport operator Northern Capital Gateway (NCG) and the airline. Cutting the cake were NCG CCO Evgeniy Ilyin and Claus Altenburg, Director Sales, Germania.

Germania, on 26 April, launched direct flights between Dresden (DRS) and St. Petersburg (LED). The capital city of the state of Saxony became a new destination in the Russian airport’s route network and the seventh German city with direct scheduled service. The LCC operates the city pair twice-weekly with its 737-700 fleet, leaving from the German city on Thursdays and Sundays and the return flights departing Russia on Fridays and Mondays. In addition to Dresden, St. Petersburg offers direct connections to such German cities as Berlin (Schönefeld and Tegel airports by Rossiya Airlines and S7 Airlines respectively), Hamburg and Düsseldorf (by Rossiya), Munich (by Rossiya and Lufthansa), Frankfurt (by Lufthansa and Ural Airlines) and Cologne Bonn (Pobeda). There is no direct competition on this sector. See how St. Petersburg Airport’s FTWA compares to others from around the world.

Germania expands flight schedule, cites airberlin insolvency

Berlin-based Germania is expanding its flight schedule for 2018 in an effort to fill a void in the German air travel market following the announcement of airberlin’s insolvency.

“As a result of the current [airberlin] situation, we have decided to expand our flight program for those travelers and tour operators that are looking for comfort and planning security,” CEO Karsten Balke said in a statement.

Because of increased demand from tour operators, the carrier said that beginning in 2018 it will operate from both Berlin airports—Tegel and Schoenefeld—to European holiday destinations.

The carrier also plans to increase its presence at Dusseldorf, a strong market and main airberlin hub, and add more flights to several European holiday destinations.

At Nurnberg, capacity to Palma de Mallorca will be doubled. New flights from Zurich (Switzerland) include routes to Ibiza (Spain), Samos (Greece) and to the Canary Islands (Spain).

For summer 2018, Germania will operate from nine German airports to Palma de Mallorca (Spain). In addition to the high season, its recently opened base at Palma will remain open for the lower demand months of March and November.

Detailed flight plans will be announced in each region separately.
