About Cemair

CemAir is a privately owned scheduled and non-scheduled domestic and international aviation company that is based at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg.

Destinations served domestically include Bloemfontein, Cape Towm, George, Margate, Plettenberg Bay and Sishen.

CemAir operates services to popular tourist destinations and important business towns and leases aircraft to other airlines across Africa and the Middle East. Based in Johannesburg, CemAir was formed in 2005 with the purpose of operating turboprop commuter aircraft. The initial fleet consisted of 1 Cessna Grand Caravan aircraft and 3 Beechcraft 1900C aircraft.

CemAir has since evolved into a specialised aircraft leasing company offering turboprop and jet aircraft to a variety of operators throughout Sub-Saharan Africa, Asia and the Indian Ocean islands as well as a significant operator of scheduled regional services within South Africa. CemAir has one primary hub in Johannesburg at OR Tambo International Airport, in addition they have 4 additional secondary hubs located in Gaborone, Juba, Lusaka and Bamako. The reason behind the secondary hubs is due to a large portion of the fleet being deployed outside of South Africa. The aircraft periodically rotate back to base for selected inspections.

CemAir take on two new aircraft

South African airlines, CemAir, has added two new aircraft to its fleet. The carrier has acquired both a new Bombardier Q400, as well as a pre-owned CRJ regional jet. The terms of the aircraft lease have not been released to the media or public.

CemAir are only one of the African airlines which has taken on Bombradier jets in early 2018. Grounded airline Cemair passes first test as it reaches for the sky

The suspension of Cemair's maintenance organisation was lifted by CAA

A grounded airline is a step closer to getting its 12 planes flying again after the Civil Aviation Authority lifted the suspension of its maintenance organisation.

A CAA statement on Saturday said the suspension was lifted with immediate effect after a five-phase certification process.

“The status quo relating to Cemair’s 12 aircraft remains the same‚ meaning that the aircraft are yet to be declared as airworthy ... and released back to service‚” the statement said.

“Notwithstanding‚ the lifting of the [maintenance organisation] suspension is a step in the right direction and means that the operator is now in a position to officially maintain their own as well as other operators’ aircraft for which they are approved.

“This also means that CemAir is now in a position to hopefully speed up the process of getting more of their aircraft ready for inspection by CAA officials. The aircraft will be released back into operation once they are certified as airworthy.”

CemAir pleased with lifting of civil aviation suspension

CemAir is pleased that the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) has lifted, with immediate effect, the suspension of CemAir’s Aircraft Maintenance Organisation (AMO) approval.

SACAA announced on Saturday that it has lifted, with immediate effect, the suspension of CemAir’s AMO approval.

This was after CemAir’s successful completion of a five-phase certification process that included, among others, document evaluation and demonstration phases.

In addition, the SACAA has lifted the grounding of CemAir’s Dash-8 Q400 aircraft. The aircraft is one of Bombardier’s flagship products offering turbo-prop short-field performance with jet-like speeds and comfort. CemAir will be operating the aircraft on selected domestic routes.

CemAir’s newest addition to its fleet, the 90-seat CRJ900 is also due for imminent release into operation. As the "big brother" to CemAir’s 50-seat CRJ 100/200 fleet, the CRJ900 is an impressive aircraft which is extremely popular in the North American and European markets, but is the first of its variant registered in South Africa.

The SACAA has committed to expediting the inspection and release back into operation of the remaining grounded aircraft.

"Whilst CemAir has successfully regained its AMO approval privileges, the status quo relating to their 12 aircraft remains the same - meaning that the aircraft are yet to be declared as airworthy by the SACAA and released back to service," SACAA said in a statement.

Bombardier cements Q400 deal with South Africa's Cem Air

South Africa's CemAir has ordered two new Bombardier Q400 turboprops and signed to lease a used Q400 ahead of the delivery of the new aircraft.
At an event in Johannesburg last night, Bombardier confirmed this orderfollowed a letter of intent signed at the Paris Airshow, earlier this year and is valued at $66million at list price.
"CemAir has enjoyed significant growth in the last few years and this has come from our focused approach on selecting the right aircraft for our operation", said Miles van der Molen, the airline’s CEO. "The Q400 is a fantastic performer especially in our environment of high altitudes and hot operating temperatures. It is really an unbeatable turboprop that brings so many jet-like features to ensure a competitive and operational advantage in our market. We see the Q400 as the ideal growth solution for our scheduled and charter operations as we continue to strengthen our relationship with Bombardier. We are working to expand our scheduled operations beyond South Africa and continuing to support new opportunities across the continent."

With these Q400 aircraft, CemAir sees an increase its current fleet of Bombardier aircraft to 17 - including five Q Series turboprops and 12 CRJ Series aircraft. CemAir recently added a used CRJ900 aircraft to its fleet, the first in South Africa.
The company has operating and leasing experience throughout Africa and the Middle East, including Afghanistan, Tunisia, Libya, Sudan, Tanzania, Democratic Republic of Congo, Senegal, Kenya, Mali, Gabon, Ghana, Namibia, Botswana, Mozambique, Nigeria, South Sudan, Zambia, as well as South Africa.
