Avianca CEO reflects on 2017 strike
Avianca CEO, Hernan Rincon, recently sat down with CNBC to discuss the impact of the strike by Avianca employees last year. The strike lasted 51 days and some flights were grounded due to a number of pilots being involved. However, one year on, Herman seemed positive about the progress that Avianca has made since the strike. He stated that Avianca was well prepared from a financial standpoint before the strike and that's one of the reasons that Avianca have reported its strongest first quarter in five years for Q12018, despite the strike.
Herman said, "this case went all the way to the supreme court and the supreme court ruled in favour of Avianca. And we're now in the process of rebuilding our routes and rebuilding our schedule. Today, we're about 95% capacity, as it compares to what it was prior to the strike and we'll be at full capacity in about three months." He continued that long-term this is a good thing for Avianca. Everyone within the airline is now at peace and the airline continues to grow.
Herman also addressed their recent decision to postpone some of their aircraft orders, "the reason we are thinking about postponing some of our orders is different. It's the fact that we have decided to retain some of the aircraft that we thought we were going to retire earlier. We've found out ways to refurbish the aircraft and extend their life, so we're retaining those. So, the growth plans are exactly the same. The timing of the deliveries is different, but only the timing. Not the amount of aircraft. Only the timing is being changed."

Avianca launch two new routes to the USA
Avianca will fly two new routes this summer, flying to both Orlando, Florida, and Boston, MA. The Colombian carrier will begin a service between San Jose, Costa Rica and Orlando starting August 2nd. The flight will run three times a week, both ways, with a stopover in Guatemala. Additionally, the airline will also fly between El Salvador and Boston four times a week, this service will start from August 17th.

Avianca launches fourth European route
Avianca has decided to make Munich its Fourth destination in Europe, in addition to Barcelona, London and Madrid. The airline hopes to start the 9355km in November 2018 subject to government approval, with Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft. According to Routes Online, Star Alliance partner Lufthansa already serves the Frankfurt-Bogota route daily with Airbus A340-300s. It is understood that Avianca was considering both Munich and Frankfurt, however, the selection of Munich gives it access to Lufthansa’s vast European network without attacking the German airline’s exiting route to Colombia. Sabre data shows an estimated 122,847 passengers flew between Colombia and Germany in 2017, with the largest indirect flows on Bogota-Frankfurt, Bogota-Munich and Bogota-Berlin, mainly connecting through Madrid.

Avianca Brasil launches 2nd daily flight to Miami
Avianca has announced that another daily flight between São Paulo and Miami in the USA. This is set to begin in December. The first flight commenced opetrations just last year and has evidently prooved popular. For this expansion to take place, it is said that Avianca will need to strengthen its widebody fllet. Avianca has also confirmed a third daily flight between Guarulhos and Santiago de Chile, which will start this summer.

Over 20,000 travelers will fly through Villeda Morales over Easter
More than 20,000 passengers will travel through Ramón Villeda Morales International Airport this Easter, known as Semana Santa in Honduras. They believe 30,000 international passengers and 10,000 national passengers will go through the country's terminals. Aerolíneas Sosa and Avianca are working hard to compensaate for the demand as both have daily flights to Roatan and La Ceiba, popular internal tourist destinations. A number of airlines who operate services from this airport may also be affected, including United Airlines, Transportes Aereos Guatemaltecos, CM Airlines and Maya Island Air.

Avianca Brasil to make a new flight between Guarulhos and Vitoria
Avianca Brasil will commence operations in Vitória, Espírito Santo, from April 16. The airline will have twice-daily, direct flights connecting the Vitória Airport, Eurico de Aguar Salles, and the Guarulhos International Airport. The aircraft which will operate this route is an Airbus A320.
"We are very proud and optimistic to announce the arrival of Avianca Brasil in Vitória. The city was already in our growth plan and we are sure that, in addition to offering the best service, this new operation will give capixabas flights with good schedules for both leisure and business travelers." says Tarcisio Gargioni, the company's vice president. The new flights, numbered 6131 and 6333, will depart from Vitória at 10:05 and 7:45 p.m., arriving in Guarulhos at 11:40 p.m. and 9:15 p.m. respectively. Conversely, flights 6130 and 6132 will depart from São Paulo at 8:10 p.m. and 5:35 p.m., landing in the capital of Espírito Santo at 11:40 p.m. and 7:10 p.m.
The Airbus A320 aircraft are configured to comfortably transport 162 passengers in a single class, with ample space between the seats and on-board entertainment system with individual screen. In addition to the attentive on-board staff, the company will also offer snacks and drinks.

Avianca becomes first Airbus A330-300 operator in Latin America
Colombian flag-carrier Avianca will add two second-hand Airbus A330-300 widebody aircraft within the first half of 2018, making the company the first Latin American operator of the type. The aircraft are to be received from TransAsia Airways, along with two additional Airbus A321ceo aircraft. The Taiwanese carrier had to sell part of its fleet amid financial difficulties after suffering two accidents within the span of seven months. In April 2017, TransAsia announced the sale, for an amount of 364 million U.S. dollars, to an undisclosed buyer. However, after several delays, airline administrators decided to continue the transaction, but with Avianca, which was placed as the second best offer for the aircraft.
The two A330-300, formerly registered as B-22101 with serial number 1357 and B-22102 with serial number 1378, are both equipped with Rolls-Royce Trent 700 and will receive Avianca registration N803AV and N804AV, respectively. TransAsia Airways’ A321s, previously registered as B-22608 with serial number 6009 and B-22610 with serial number 6294, will adopt N805AV y N810AV. As per Colombian law, aircraft registrations are made with the United States Federal Aviation Administration.

Avianca Brasil Eyes A321neos and Europe
Avianca Brasil dedicates two Airbus A330-200s to each of its U.S. routes from São Paulo. With eight leased A320neos already in service, four directly ordered A320neos due for delivery by March, and 58 more on order from Airbus, Avianca Brasil is considering adding the larger A321neo to its fleet, airline CEO Frederico Pedreira confirmed to AIN in New York following the launch of daily São Paulo Guarulhos-New York JFK nonstop service on December 15.
While Pedreira didn’t say how Avianca Brasil might deploy A321neos, the carrier has started to build a medium- and long-haul international network encompassing four destinations: Bogota, Santiago de Chile, Miami, and New York. Avianca Brasil also operates domestic routes linking 23 Brazilian cities and has begun the process of launching Avianca Argentina to operate domestic and international routes from Buenos Aires. Describing 2017 as fast-growing Avianca Brasil’s “craziest year in seven years” of existence because it launched three international routes during the year (to Miami, Santiago, and New York), Pedreira also said the airline “would like to add at least one more international destination next year.” While he wouldn’t reveal its identity, Pedreira confirmed that Avianca Brasil would like to serve Europe. However, despite the close cultural ties that exist between Portugal and Brazil and the fact that, like Avianca Brasil, TAP Portugal is a Star Alliance member, Portugal’s capital Lisbon “is not one of the destinations we have in mind.”
Avianca Brasil’s focus on high levels of customer service has led it to offer daytime flights in both directions between its U.S. destinations and São Paulo, dedicating two A330-200s to each route so its aircraft can overnight at Miami and New York. It also flies an A330-200 Freighter and appears likely to add more A330-200s before it receives in 2020 the first of 10 A350-900s it ordered from Airbus, as it seeks to build what Pedreira called a “critical mass of A330s and [long-haul] destinations.” When Avianca Brasil starts receiving A350-900s, it will “then up-gauge [existing long-haul routes] with the A350 or open up new destinations not feasible with the A330” for capacity and operating-economics reasons.
At that point, added Pedreira, Avianca Brasil could begin using some A330-200s—whose range out of São Paulo’s Guarulhos Airport “is impressive” given the airport’s 2,460-foot elevation above sea level—to launch services to Europe. The carrier’s Star Alliance affiliation suggests Frankfurt, Europe’s largest Star Alliance hub, could be its first European destination, and Avianca Brasil chose to serve New York JFK rather than United’s nearby Star Alliance hub at Newark because sister carrier Avianca “was already there and it made no sense to add a new airport in New York.” Pedreira expects Avianca Argentina to launch its first international route in April or May, serving São Paulo Guarulhos from Buenos Aires with A320-family jets. It will almost certainly operate the São Paulo flights from Ezeiza, the Argentine capital’s intercontinental airport, rather than Aeroparque Jorge Newbery. Despite Aeroparque’s convenient downtown location and the fact that Avianca Brasil holds some slots there, Argentine government policy calls for Aeroparque to host domestic flights, according to Pedreira.

Avianca Brasil files preliminary New York schedule from Dec 2017
Avianca Brasil recently filed proposed operational schedule for Sao Paulo Guarulhos – New York JFK route. Operational schedule is also filed in the GDS, only appearing in the FLIFO section (Flight Information). Proposed schedule shows the airline operates daily flight, from 15DEC17.
A330-200 aircraft would be operating this route, with following schedule.

MIA celebrates launch of São Paulo service by Avianca Brasil
Avianca Brasil gathered at Miami International Airport to celebrate the launch of the airline's daily Miami-São Paulo service, marking Avianca Brasil's first passenger route to a U.S. destination and only its second outside of South America. "I commend the MIA team for continually attracting new international air service to our community," said Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez. "It is especially encouraging to see increased service from our top international market of Brazil, which had a downturn in travel last year."
The June 26 celebration included a ceremonial ribbon-cutting, commemorative cake and refreshments with passengers, and a water-cannon salute from Miami-Dade Fire Rescue before Avianca Brasil's Monday departure to São Paulo. Avianca Brasil's first Miami-bound flight left Sao Paulo (GRU) on Friday, June 23, at 11:55 p.m. and landed at MIA at 7:25 a.m. on Saturday, June 24. The new daily nonstop passenger flights are serviced by Airbus A330-200 aircraft that seat 238 passengers.
Avianca Brasil is the eighth international passenger airline to schedule a service launch into the Miami market this year. Mexican low-cost carrier Volaris began four weekly flights to Guadalajara and daily service to Mexico City on February 1; Canadian airline First Air began charter passenger flights on February 4 from Ontario; low-cost transatlantic airline WOW air launched thrice-weekly service to Reykjavík, Iceland on April 5; BVI Airways is scheduled to launch first-ever nonstop service between Tortola, British Virgin Islands and MIA on July 22. Aer Lingus will launch three weekly flights to Dublin, Ireland on September 1; SAS will begin weekly service to Stockholm, Sweden on October 29; and EL AL Israel Airlines will begin three weekly flights from Tel Aviv on November 1. MIA currently serves 106 airlines, which is the most of any U.S. airport.

Avianca Brasil announced the launch of Miami - Sao Paulo service. Oceanair Linhas Aereas S.A. (Avianca Brasil) has announced that it will launch daily passenger service between Miami International Airport and Sao Paulo on June 23, 2017. The flights will be served by Airbus A330-200 aircraft that seat 238 passengers. Miami will be the first U.S. destination and only the second outside of Brazil for the airline, which has operated freighter service at MIA since 2015. Avianca Brasil, which has been a scheduled carrier since 2002, currently serves 22 destinations in Brazil and one in Colombia with 230 daily flights, carrying 9.4 million passengers in 2016. MIA currently serves an average of 71 weekly non-stop passenger flights to eight cities in Brazil, which is the most of any U.S. airport.
Avianca Brasil will be the airport's third airline serving Brazil, MIA's top international market in 2015 with more 2.1 million total passengers. Avianca Brasil is the fifth passenger airline to schedule a launch into the Miami market this year. Mexican low-cost carrier Volaris began four weekly flights to Guadalajara and daily flights to Mexico City on February 1. Volaris was followed three days later by Canadian airline First Air, which began charter passenger flights from Ontario on behalf of Celebrity Cruises.

Avianca Brazil received its first Airbus A320, becoming the first Americas operator to take delivery of the re-engined narrowbody with CFM International Leap-1A engines. The airline has equipped its A320neo with 165 seats on board. Avianca Brazil is the second South American carrier to receive the A320neo, after LATAM Airlines Brazil. Avianca and Avianca Brazil remains separate legal entities. Avianca Brazil fleet's consists of Airbus A318, A319, A320, A330 and A350. Avianca Brazil has codeshare agreements with Aeromexico, Air Canada, Air Europa, Avianca, Ethiopian Airlines, Etihad Airways, South African Airways, TACA Airlines, Turkish Airlines and United Airlines.

Avianca started an implementation of Wi-Fi connectivity in its aircraft serving destinations within Brazil. The project is to roll-out the service gradually until December 2017, when it's expected that the entire fleet of 41 planes will be equipped with the service. Currently, only one plane offers the satellite-enabled service, which will only be free in the first three months after launch. It is expected that an additional five planes will be equipped by the end of October. Avianca is the first airline to offer Wi-Fi on board in South America.
