Air Choice One's Jackson to Atlanta flight, McKellar-Sipes soaring to new heights
Nearly every flight from Jackson to Atlanta has been sold out since Air Choice One began offering a daily roundtrip flight from McKellar-Sipes Regional Airport to Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in March.
The next step for McKellar-Sipes is securing a larger aircraft it can use on the Jackson to Atlanta flights to increase the number of passengers per day.
Its current airplane seats up to eight passengers, but McKellar-Sipes Regional Airport Executive Director Steve Smith said they are hopeful Air Choice One will be able to bring its twin-engine Beechcraft, which can hold 19 people, sometime later this year.
“As long as we keep filling the airplane, I think Air Choice One will be respondent to that,” he said.
The flight to Atlanta has already seen the number of passengers on flights out of Jackson at 20 per day — more than double the 10-a-day threshold required by the government-funded Essential Air Services program. A bigger airplane would also increase the on-time percentage, because it would be able to reach Atlanta quicker, Smith said.
Flights to Atlanta are an hour-and-a-half, with ticket prices starting at $65. Atlanta became McKellar-Sipes’ second destination flight out of Jackson — the other is St. Louis. Dating back to October, Air Choice One has a 99 percent completion rate and 96 percent on-time rate for flights out of Jackson, Smith said.
Smith said the flight to St. Louis has also felt a boost from the Atlanta flight.
“We’ve had many days where the St. Louis flight has been full also,” Smith said.
A third destination flight?
No decisions on a third destination flight have been made, but after analyzing the Union University’s McAfee School of Business’ survey gauging West Tennesseans interest in adding a flight to Florida’s Gulf Coast in 2018, the numbers show the interest is there, Smith said.
Wherever the third destination flight is, however, Smith said the price-point will be higher than flights to Atlanta or St. Louis since the flight would not be subsidized by the government.
