Aigle Azur to branch into long-haul with A330 order

Lessors dominate Airbus, Boeing November orders

French leisure airline Aigle Azur has placed an order for two Airbus A330-200s, which it will use to launch long-haul flights.

On Dec. 12, Aigle Azur said it had ordered a pair of Pratt & Whitney PW4000-powered A330s. The aircraft will be equipped with a three-class layout—including lie-flat business seats, economy plus and economy—along with the latest generation of on-demand IFE.

“The two A330s will join the Aigle Azur fleet during the first semester of 2018,” Aigle Azur said.

Aigle Azur has been through several changes over recent months, with Brazilian-American entrepreneur David Neeleman acquiring a 32% stake and L’Avion founder Frantz Yvelin being named as president and CEO.

HNA Group currently owns 48% of Aigle Azur, with the remaining 20% held by Lu Azur, managed by French independent investor Gérard Houa.

Yvelin said the team has been working on an ambitious strategic plan since he was appointed in summer 2017. He said the aircraft order forms a concrete step in Aigle Azur’s development, adding the A330s would open new horizons for the company. No destinations were specified.

Privately owned Aigle Azur has been running since 1946 and serves destinations in Algeria, Germany, Lebanon, Mali, Portugal and Senegal from six points in France.

The airline handles around 2 million passengers annually and operates a single A319 and nine A320s.

Aigle Azur names former L’Avion chief as CEO

French leisure airline Aigle Azur has appointed Frantz Yvelin as president and CEO, the executive who founded all-business airline L’Avion that was ultimately sold to British Airways (BA).

Serial airline entrepreneur Yvelin, who is succeeds former Aigle Azur CEO Michael Hamelink, has already taken on his new role.

Yvelin, a qualified Airbus and Boeing pilot, is a known figure in French aviation. After starting out as an IT consultant, he created all-business airline L’Avion in 2006.

L’Avion was acquired by BA in 2008 for £54 million ($69.5 million) and renamed as OpenSkies. Yvelin stayed on as director of strategy and development for the BA-owned airline.

In 2013, after three years in consultancy, Yvelin’s company Dreamjet Participations created another premium carrier, La Compagnie. Dreamjet Participations acquired 100% of XL Airways France in 2016. Yvelin was La Compagnie

Yvelin said Aigle Azur’s shareholders have chosen an entrepreneur as CEO. He committed to “bold development” and a quick return to profitability for Aigle Azur, which was founded in 1946 and is France’s oldest privately owned airline.

“Numerous challenges await us, but I see them as an incredible opportunity,” Yvelin said.

Aigle Azur, which is part owned by Chinese conglomerate HNA Group, has a fleet of Airbus A319/A320s and carries around 2 million passengers annually. The airline operates 300 scheduled flights each week from six French cities to destinations in Algeria, Portugal, Mali, Senegal, Guinea and Lebanon.

March 2017

Aigle Azur announced it will start operating direct flights from Paris Orly to Beirut Rafic Hariri International Airport (BRHIA) on June 23. Middle East Airlines (MEA), which has a code-sharing agreement with Air France, is the only carrier so far on the Paris-Beirut route.

Air France has a maximum of 14 flights per week. There is a chance that it will increase weekly flights by three. Aigle Azure will cover the rest. Aigle Azur’s request is currently being studied by the Civil Aviation Authority.
