Avianca CEO reflects on 2017 strike
Avianca CEO, Hernan Rincon, recently sat down with CNBC to discuss the impact of the strike by Avianca employees last year. The strike lasted 51 days and some flights were grounded due to a number of pilots being involved. However, one year on, Herman seemed positive about the progress that Avianca has made since the strike. He stated that Avianca was well prepared from a financial standpoint before the strike and that's one of the reasons that Avianca have reported its strongest first quarter in five years for Q12018, despite the strike.
Herman said, "this case went all the way to the supreme court and the supreme court ruled in favour of Avianca. And we're now in the process of rebuilding our routes and rebuilding our schedule. Today, we're about 95% capacity, as it compares to what it was prior to the strike and we'll be at full capacity in about three months." He continued that long-term this is a good thing for Avianca. Everyone within the airline is now at peace and the airline continues to grow.
Herman also addressed their recent decision to postpone some of their aircraft orders, "the reason we are thinking about postponing some of our orders is different. It's the fact that we have decided to retain some of the aircraft that we thought we were going to retire earlier. We've found out ways to refurbish the aircraft and extend their life, so we're retaining those. So, the growth plans are exactly the same. The timing of the deliveries is different, but only the timing. Not the amount of aircraft. Only the timing is being changed."

Avianca launch two new routes to the USA
Avianca will fly two new routes this summer, flying to both Orlando, Florida, and Boston, MA.
The Colombian carrier will begin a service between San Jose, Costa Rica and Orlando starting August 2nd. The flight will run three times a week, both ways, with a stopover in Guatemala.
Additionally, the airline will also fly between El Salvador and Boston four times a week, this service will start from August 17th.

Avianca launches fourth European route
Avianca has decided to make Munich its Fourth destination in Europe, in addition to Barcelona, London and Madrid. The airline hopes to start the 9355km in November 2018 subject to government approval, with Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft. According to Routes Online, Star Alliance partner Lufthansa already serves the Frankfurt-Bogota route daily with Airbus A340-300s. It is understood that Avianca was considering both Munich and Frankfurt, however, the selection of Munich gives it access to Lufthansa’s vast European network without attacking the German airline’s exiting route to Colombia. Sabre data shows an estimated 122,847 passengers flew between Colombia and Germany in 2017, with the largest indirect flows on Bogota-Frankfurt, Bogota-Munich and Bogota-Berlin, mainly connecting through Madrid.

Avianca Airlines and Sabre renew technology partnership

In conjunction with Flight Explorer, Avianca will utilize the Surface Manager module to provide full awareness of aircraft location on the ground, even before takeoff and after landing.
Flight Explorer streamlines data delivery, allows for intuitive flight management, enables integrated flight planning and allows users to set advanced, flight-specific thresholds based on industry or company requirements. Flight Explorer also streamlines route analysis through graphical route displays that include real-time data such as weather and airspace restrictions. These capabilities help Avianca make decisions based on the most current data, ultimately saving on costs and minimizing disruptions which results in a better passenger experience.
Flight tracking is not a new concept.
